Who Uses Cross-Docking (and Who Should Not)
Cross-docking works best for freight with a known destination and a short dwell time: retail replenishment, import containers being split to regional stores, perishable and temperature-sensitive goods that should not sit, and consolidation of many small shipments into one linehaul. It is the wrong tool for inventory you want to hold and pick from over time. For that, use warehousing or commercial storage.

Traditional warehousing stores product for days or months and picks it on demand. Cross-docking eliminates the storage step and the second touch. Cross-docking is cheaper per pallet when freight moves quickly, and warehousing is cheaper when product needs to wait for orders.
